    Two questions about Pasta

When I make Lasagna, I often have some leftover noodles. I store them in a sealed container in the fridge. When I go to use them again ( usually just to snack on and dip in the left over sauce), I just fill a bowl with water, dunk them in, and they separate, usually with no issue. As long as...

    Garden 2024

I don't think there has ever been a day that I go into a nursery and don't come out with something else that I stumbled upon. There's a nursery near me that is in a town that is very ethnically diverse. I alsways find new, unique ( to me) things that I can't resist buying.

    Today's harvest

Yeah, the end of the gardening season, is the beginning of the following gardening season ( at least for me). Figuring out what you did wrong and what you did right. Making notes for the following year, Organizing all your garden stuff so you know where it is the following year when you need...

2024 May 11 What was your supper?

A take on a Burmese pasta dish a friend showed me years ago. "Chicken" stock + coconut milk as a base, poured over Rice noodles , garnished with garlic, cilantro and a squeeze of lime. His dish had chicken and hard boiled quail eggs in it. To replace chicken, I used seitan, and didn't even...

The only issue I ever had with garlic was over watering/ poor drainage. Took me a 2 years to correct, but the affects didn't really show until a few weeks before normal harvest time. It showed itself by having premature yellowing of the leaves. Other than that, I've never had issues. What's...

Best brand of bottled orange juice

I've always gone with Tropicana. It's my go to orange juice. I haven't tasted many other brands, soIm not sure how it compares. I try to stay away from store brands, as I've had few stinkers over the years, so I stick to what I know I like and is consistently good. I do like some pulp.

Quick question. If you cut off a carrot top, and put it in water, it will develop roots and the greens will grow ( you won't regenerate a new carrot). My questions is, will the greens ultimately flower and produce seeds ? I got this carrot from the Asian market, and it was huge. I'd love to...

Canning Sauerkraut that I made a few weeks ago.

Here's another rookie question. Do the jars themselves need to be heated / disinfected prior to canning the sauerkraut? They're brand new jars and lids, can I just load and submerge ?

Canning Sauerkraut that I made a few weeks ago.

We still talk about it to this day. I kinda wish we actually saw a tornado, but we basically did everything else to experience it but that.

    Mix of Cooked Grains

I usually don't mix grains, but have been substituting them in places where I would have used more unhealthier options. I have lately been on a Bulgur wheat kick, making multiple different salads with them. Also been using a lot of farro or wheat berries too.

    Black garlic-how is it fermented?

That is interesting and really cool. ( I love the folding proofer). As much as I'd love to try it, I have no other real reason for the proofer other than this and don't want to tie up my dehydrator for a month ( or burn it out). That being said, knowing me, my curiosity will get the better...

I always grow tons of dill ( enough for a year) very early, cause it freezes so well ( when compared to other herbs). I do grow more during the main season, but usually it bolts, or gets covered with Black Swallowtail butterfly eggs.

Life Changes and how to adjust cooking habits...

I usually plan dinner menus a week at a time . I make a list of everything we will have for the week. In addition to the daily menus that I plan on cooking , I have a list ( underneath my list) of all the things that are " Ready to go" (Leftovers) in the freezer. They never get bumped off that...

How far ahead can I prep these items??

If you're prechoppinng the onion, be sure to seal it well when storing in the fridge, for no other reason that if its exposed , everything in the fridge will pick up some of the onion smell and taste. For just a day, if properly stored, they all should be fine except possibly the lettuce...

    Quick question about growing Tomatillos

That happened to my dad. His house was at the bottom of a hill. Every time it rained, a ' River ' would form from the top of the hill. It would wash everyone's ( from the top of the hill's) backyard furniture into his backyard, flow through his garden , then cause a waterfall off a brick wall...
