That is lovely, and my stars, that kitchen! I'm sure you'll enjoy many years in your new home.

Is anyone else noticing lower food prices at the grocery store?

I agree with Blissful, who said that growing your own vegetables, fruits and nuts is more cost effective than before. And may I add the home-grown are not only very fresh but also taste better. Caseydog pointed out that grocery tomatoes are tasteless. I agree, plus the texture is strange. Give...

    Garden 2024

We are having a bumper crop of cherry tomatoes, and just harvested our first Roma tomato. Most of our garden was washed out (literally) by the torrential rains we have had, but two bell pepper plants and four tomato plants survived. Ah well, next season. . .

    Today's Funny

If the grocery store has a section labeled "Health Foods", what is the rest of the store?

Is anyone else noticing lower food prices at the grocery store?

We are extremely fortunate to have enough space and two growing seasons for our vegetable gardens. We also have fruit and nut trees. We'd rather spend time weeding and harvesting than wandering grocery aisles. Our hens give us eggs (not cost effective considering the price of chicken feed, but...

    Past Food Fads

Anyone remember food fads that (thankfully) have disappeared? I remember salad dressing sprays. Terrible thing to do to a good salad. Consumers and cooks have wised up! Remind us of fads that have gone into the history books.

How much to you worry about what you eat?

Like Julia Child, everything in moderation. Very few desserts because my husband is diabetic, but we eat what we want but not to excess. We don't eat much processed food because we have our own vegetable garden and I like to cook, so no "ready to nuke and eat" meals for us. To rate our "worry"...

Hello from New Orleans - Where Ya At?

Welcome! New Orleans is such a wonderful city which we were privileged to visit. We fell in love with Jackson Square, the Museum of Art, Audubon zoo, and the food! We live in a restaurant deprived area of central Texas, so I cook a lot, and have two prized and well used cookbooks, River Road...

What did you eat Tuesday, May 21, 2024?

We had a shrimp pasta salad with assorted crackers. It was too warm to cook, and we didn't want hot food!

What are your guilty pleasures... Fess up

Ah, so many guilty pleasures, where to begin? White wine, lightly chilled so the flavor isn't killed by cold. Shrimp! Lindt chocolates, those little balls of joy. There are more, but I'm getting hungry so I'll go forage in the kitchen.

    Black garlic-how is it fermented?

I was recently asked if I "grew" black garlic. Having never heard of black garlic, I looked it up and found it is regular garlic, fermented. Can anyone tell me how to ferment garlic to make black garlic? I looked on the 'net and did not find any instructions, just health benefits and the definition.

    Ants in the spring....

Here in Texas we know what season it is by the insect populations. We have ant season, red wasp season, beetle season, crane fly season, etc. Makes for exciting spraying and swatting!

    Our pets

Georgie Boy is a charmer! I love almost anything with fur, but cats have a special place in my regard. I think it's because they don't give a darn, and let you know it!

    Tips for using your microwave

Our microwave is used like Aunt Bea's--I reheat/heat leftovers, canned soups, frozen meals, steam in bag vegetables, etc… I am old school and enjoy smelling food cooking, stirring and checking food in a pot or pan, and being in the kitchen for however long it takes. There are advantages to...

Garlic for 2024, one new variety this year

Like Larry's, our garlic is growing like a weed! We usually harvest in June, but it may be early harvest this season. I love reading about the different types of garlic you all plant, but I just get plain old hardneck garlic bulbs from the grocery.

    Our pets

God, for some unknown reason, sent us a pregnant feral cat. She had her kittens in the workshop and we fed and raised them, getting their shots and vet exams. They all eventually left except for Timi. She has been with us for seven years and rules the house and yard. We are thinking of posting a...

    Random Pictures

There is a native Texas tree, the Retama, that is so hardy it can survive almost anything! We have one in the corner of the barn lot. Only down side is that the Retama is as thorny as all get-out.

    What Are Your Other Interests?

I enjoy crossword puzzles (God bless the New York Times Sunday puzzles!), gardening, petting our cat Timi, and watching a few TV programs (Jeopardy!). Hey Badjak, my husband makes beer.

Blue cheese and pear preserves omelette

I'd make a nice omelet, sans pear preserves and bleu cheese, and have a fresh pear and gorgonzola for dessert.

    Chex Remix Pizza Flavor

We like Chex Mix, so we got this new product. My husband tasted it and said it was awful. I did the same with the same rating. We fed the rest of the bag to the chickens, who will eat anything. Big thumbs down.

    Petty Vents II

Andy and Casey, we have used Arm & Hammer for years, and will continue to do so. Our laundry is clean and doesn't smell up the house!

    Petty Vents II

Why does every soap have to smell? Isn't clean enough? We recently bought a washer which came with Tide coupons and a sample of Tide pod laundry detergent. Gosh, that stuff smells! We could smell it while the laundry washed, the laundry still smelled strong after drying, and the odor spread to...

I'm So Old That I Remember...

I remember when we had a large book with everyone's name, address, and telephone number in it. It was kept under the telephone, which had a cord. Also, everyone was on a "party line" unless you were hoity-toity and paid extra for a private line.
