I'll have to try that. Smashing red potatoes seems to be all the rage. Another version has you smashing and frying then in oil.

The only reason I keep making the recipe is in hopes that one day I will mash one down with my wire potato masher and leave the perfect looking grooves on top

And one where you can eat the mistakes is even better.

Cooks Illustrated has a recipe like that but they use another sheet pan to quickly smash all the potatoes at once. Of course, that would probably sacrifice the perfect grooves.
