"First off 'he' is not even going to notice or care" How true. How true. Most future husbands couldn't care less. I really feel for the young men being traipsed round department stores every Saturday for months, choosing flatware and china and frocks for the bridesmaids and, in one case I came across recently, even his future mother-in-law's hat, for god's sake!. In the UK it's traditional that the future husband is responsible for the ring(s), the church fees, presents for the bridesmaids, the best man and the ushers and flowers for the bride, the bride's mother, his own mother and the bridesmaids. He also pays for buttonholes for himself and the best man and arranges and pays for transport for him and the best man before the wedding and for himself and his bride afterwards. However, he doesn't have much choice in the matter!"Oh it will have so much meaning for us if we do everything ourselves."
First off 'he' is not even going to notice or care. And don't even think of trying to sucker him into doing all this handmade stuff with you. He would rather work overtime so you can pay to have 'that' done. Young girls just don't know where to draw the line.
My youngest son had a very simple wedding. No fancy over the top decorations for the hall. Each table had a small center piece so you could talk over it to the person across the table. The head table did have more flowers in the color of the wedding. And the bride/grooms table had more roses. The cake was a plain three tier with a band around the middle tier.
That was it. They had a lot of guests along with a very large dance floor. That dance floor got more use than any other part of the wedding. The reception started at 5 p.m. At 2 a.m. the staff had to tell them it was time for everyone to go home. They were tired. It was one of the funnest weddings I have ever been to.
There's a growing tendency over here for the wedding party to go of the foreign parts for the wedding which cuts down on the expense - mind you, I came across a case recently where the "happy couple" were expected to foot the bill for their relatives to attend the wedding on the beach in the Caribbean!!
The best wedding I ever went to was my college flat mate's. We were students so not much money. It was a registry office "do", so no bridesmaids, she bought a dress from a not very up-market chain store and a small, very unpretention bouquet cought from the local florist on the day, and we, her college buddies, rallied round to prepare the sandwiches, cake etc., for the reception which was held in her mother small house. The house was packed with guests so everyone had to socialise with everone else (you get quite friendly with the uncle who's sitting on the stairs if you have to climb over him every time you need to go upstairs to the loo!) The honeymoon was a climbing trip to Switzerland (sleeping in a tent!) and they were very happy for years.

I also made chocolate cake. This is a recipe from King Arthur, it is very good! I used Dutch process cocoa and it worked well. This is a nice, light textured chocolate cake.

I used whipped chocolate ganache. 24oz. Milk chocolate (chopped or chips) whisked into 16 oz. of boiling Heavy cream until smooth, (bring cream to a boil, remove from heat and whisk in chocolate) let cool completely and whip until just spreading consistency. If you over whip, it will break, if it does just melt, cool and whip again.

I baked two loaves of zucchini bread today.
