GG, every time I've tried searing steak or burgers on my CI pan, the smoke detectors go off. I've given up ever doing it in this house. I want my next house to have an exhaust fan big enough to lift a VW Beetle. We thought of adding a big fan to this house, but when we measured we realized that it would end up venting into the sun room. Nope Nope Nope.

It was pouring down rain when we were ready to grill, so I ended up searing the steaks on my cast-iron griddle on the gas stove. Still good.

That works too, GG. If it's raining and we want rib eyes, we use the broiler.
