A friend recently said she knows I'm good at throwing parties, and she's throwing her first, a party for her child's 8th grade graduation.

She started by telling me that her mother was making pulled pork. I told her to start by getting some buns, she'd already done that.

Then I said, if the main thing is going to be pulled pork, she needs to go buy some slaw. She replied that she makes a great slaw.

She didn't know that a pulled pork sandwich has to have slaw on the side.

After that? Go to Sam's and buy finger food. I didn't realize she was so naive when it came to entertaining.

To me, if you have two great things, the pork and the slaw, then you can just buy the other stuff and move on. For what it is worth, I pretty much know my town, and everyone will probably be thrilled with this.
