what kind of candy do you give out at halloween?

do you get many kids?

dw came home with the good stuff from bjs the other day. mini snickers, hershey bars, mars bars, almond and mounds, 3 musketeers, various gummy creatures, mike and ikes, good-n-plenty, razor apples, bazooka bubble gum, mary janes, pixie sticks, twizzlers, milk duds, and junior mints.

we usually get a few dozen kids.

the ones that are too old, or have no costume and just stick out their hand get the apples.

i'm usually loaded with fullly loaded super soakers and modified tip cans of shaving cream for those older kids without costumes nor manners and object to being tricked-not-treated.

so,what's on your menu and expected experience on this night before the day of all saints/samhain?

pronounced "all saints day". :D

We give the usual stuff. We rarely get kids since I moved into an apartment. There are a few older ladies that sit in the entrance of the building and hand out candies. Nobody gets by them.

Living in a town house condo there are a lot of homes in a small area so we get lots of kids. We buy a big bag of fun-size candy bars from Costco (brand name chocolate bars) - about 150 candies and we run out every year.

My daughter brings my grandson here for trick or treating and I walk around with them while SO mans the front door. The neighborhood kids are cute and it's fun. Later in the evening, van loads of kids from a nearby lower income area flood the area looking for goodies. They get the last of the candy and we turn off our lights.

No kids, not worth it for the one or two that might show up. I hand out at work where about three different pre-schools bring their little ones in for treats from the residents.

Oh, I hand out brand name candy bars and laffy taffy.

so, you really do give out candy. just not at home.

i was careful to word it to imply but not restrict it to home.

Recently we've had a number of families with little kids move into our subdivision. For years we just had a few kids. Some years we'd also get kids from neighboring subdivisions. We're outside of town, so we've never gotten hoards.

I get what I'd like to eat, the mixed bags of Snickers, Milky Way, chocolate and caramel stuff. I freeze the leftovers, and try to hide them from myself.

We live in a development. Roughly 70 houses in the newer section of 2 1/2 streets, around a hundred for the older section of three+ streets. A nice, lightly traveled neighborhood with paved streets and some sidewalks. AND we're a border town with CT. Over the line is a lot more rural. Busier roads. No sidewalks. And far-spaced houses. AND right at the beginning of the older section of the neighborhood is a small shopping center with a large, empty parking lot. Last year the neighbor about five doors up counted each and every beggar at their door. 362 trick-or-treaters. We're gonna run out....

I'm in a small town on the edge of the city limits, we get around 30-40 (at most) little ghosts and goblins on my street. :devilish: I'm out in one of the boonie neighborhoods that still has streetlights and sidewalks. :) There's a Halloween community event out at the fairgounds now, so we don't get quite as many trick or treaters.

I just get a few bags of chocolates, fruit chewies, and hope to give it all out before the night is over. LOL

I'm particularly glad that Halloween is on a Friday night this year! :)

I live in a security building so the trick or treaters, Easter bunny and Santa Claus don't even bother trying to get in. I don't know how the tooth fairy gets in, but according to the little kid on the first floor he does!

I used to buy a bag or two of Reese's peanut butter cups. The candy eventually went to waist so now I keep a few quarters on hand just in case a goblin stumbles to the door.

Years ago when I lived in a house I would give candy bars to the kids and shots of peppermint schnapps to the proud parents hiding in the bushes. I always made sure that the Reese's peanut butter cups were in the bottom of the candy bowl! ;)

A tip that I used to do on Halloween night. Remove the glass panel from your screen door, keep the door locked and hand the candy through the hole in the door. It keeps the little kids and the towering six footers from trying to come into the house. It also used to startle a few of the little beggars! :ermm::ohmy::LOL:

I live on the second floor of a secured building. Kids don't even bother to ring a bell. Only grandchildren come to show of their costumes to the grandparents.

Next week on the third, shopping in the morning and a doctor's appointment right after for a consultation regarding my swallowing problems. It is going to be a busy day. Not something I am looking forward to. I hate shopping.

It's rather lovely here in the village as we get a flyer about a week before telling us (from the parents association) that the kids accompanied by some adults will be going around the houses at from about 6pm onwards and our welcome would be appreciated. All 'goodies' are collected in a big bag and later shared out over soup/ hot chocolate and no doubt a glass of wine for the grown-ups. Pride is taken in making home-made costumes, make-up etc. and WE are suitably scared, impressed, frightened by the results! I respect the idea of making your own fancy dress and fun and so I make cookies, sweeties and light lots of candles at the entrance to add to the atmosphere. As we are Scottish, not French, the kids are already in awe of us and I'm sure that they are delighted that we join in......at least I hope so

I hate to sound like a Grinch/Scrooge (or whatever the Halloween equivalent is) but we just aren't going to do the candy thing anymore. There was a time when most of the kids in our neighborhood were of that age, but are now in high school or college. Last year, we had a total of 7 kids, and all but a couple were well into their teens. We didn't know any of them and, to make matters worse, one broke a landscaping light.

On top of that, I'm diabetic and don't want candy around the house.

So this year we're going to shut off the porch light, put the dogs in their kennels, and head out to see a movie.

I am old and decrepit. Having to run to the door every time some obnoxious rug rat shows up with a mask and a bag is a royal pain.

I get out of work, I go to a restaurant for dinner, then I go to a movie. By the time I get home, all the little brats are in bed dreaming about how they can be even more annoying tomorrow.

Steve, not Grinchy or Scrooge-y sounding at all....hope you enjoy your date night out at the movies. :)

Sir Loin, on the other hand.... :)

We give out a full-sized assortment of Hershey's and Mars candy bars. I've given out Dove in the past, but DW thinks that the kids only like Mars candies, and Reese's. She still believes that her favorites are the only favorites.

When the kids took mostly Hershey's product two years back, she grudgingly quit complaining when I insist that we include that product.

Ah well, it is what it is. Any way you look at it, I still play harmless and fun tricks on the kids. They love coming to our house, even if we only get 30 to 40 as we live outside of town as well.

For those of you with yards, try fishing for them, wearing a crazy swamp outfit or something, with a heavy pole and line, and a bag of candy bars as bait. It's a hoot.:D When one of the kids grabs the bag, yell to the house - "Martha, get the pot ready! I got one!"

Every year I buy an assortment of candy that I like. I don't get those silly tiny candy bars. There is no fun in fun sized. I go for the full sized bars. Why get a candy bar unless it's the real thing? Besides I'd like for them to remember Halloween as I do. You got a real candy bar for your effort and not some tiny version someone gave you to save a buck.

I get Snickers, Dove bars (Milk & Dark), and whatever I'm in the mood for while I'm standing there looking at candy and recalling my days of trick or treating. I buy several whatever they come in packs. Lets just say I have plenty of candy.

I haven't had a Trick or Treater come to my house in the 22+ years I've lived here.

But if do get one they will be the happiest little trick or treaters in the world.
I plan to let them pick the candy of there choice and once they've done that I'll dump every piece of candy I have into there bag.
They will have scored a winner and my butt won't grow several inches due to excessive candy intake

You've been buying full-sized candy bars for 22 years and haven't had a trick or treater.:ohmy::ohmy: You butt isn't the issue here. :(:(

We give out tootsie pops. They come in a huge bag from costco and aren't too tempting if there are some left. A few years ago we also tried giving out full sized airheads - they come in a box from cash and carry and are pretty cheap but we found that we had repeaters at the door and so never did that again.

We also give out booze to our neighbors who trick or treat each year with shot glasses - sort of a local tradition.

We live on 11 acres almost 14 miles out in the country so no chance of little ghoulies and goblins, except for grandchildren escorted by their parents.

Having said that, we still have a bowl of (our favorite) candy at the ready in the case of emergency trick-or-treaters stopping by.

Oh yes my butt is the issue.

I use Halloween as an excuse to buy excessive amounts of candy. :(

I know I won't be able to give it away.

It goes to my butt. :pig:

Hello, I'm Zagut. I'm a Chocoholic. :yum:
