Brown sugar lemonade

Has anyone ever tried using brown sugar instead of white to make the simple syrup? My daughter, while student teaching at Towson, use to go by a deli that served Brown sugar lemonade, now we are trying to reconstruct it. Any help of ideas much appreciated.
