Bleach solution rubbed on the outside won't kill the bacteria that are inside the can. It isn't always obvious when the top or bottom is loosened. That can must have been damaged in shipping, so bacteria got in that way.

Like I said, I am not sure that would have been a wise move either. The rest of the cans looked fine. But he didn't want to take that chance. So much for that sale.

I had always heard of swollen cans being bad. That was the first time I had actually seen one. :angel:
 
Swollen cans are a big No-No.

But it's an issue of quality and not safety when it's past the "Best By" date.

It's not expired. It's simply that the manufacturer is stating that it's quality could be degraded beyond the date stated.

Cinderella had an expiration date.
Prince Charming went beyond it.
I rest my case. ;)
