I love arugula; however, two years in a row I had what seems to me an odd occurance. My greens patch is a few inches deep over an old cistern. It is perfect for growing lettuce. I love having a bit of a peppery green in my salad. Towards the end of the season, though, I've found that all of my greens taste like arugula. Last year I thought it was just me; with the big M, my taste buds have gone awry. But last night I went out and specifically picked only the romaine, ruffles, etc, and it all tasted like ... arugula. My husband said, "I love this peppery stuff, but prefer it in a stir fry or pasta rather than a salad." There was no arugula in it. The arugula flavor had permeated the other greens. How come? What happens?. I understand cross-pollination, but these plants weren't old enough for that (none had bolted).
