Chili is something that uses the items on your cheap list. Ground beef, tinned tomatoes, onions, beans (pretty much any kind will work), and spices. You can serve chili over rice, too.

A decent Cajun dirty rice is another thing you can make with those ingredients.

An American classic, Sloppy Joe's is another thing that uses those ingredients, and some bread rolls.

Recipes for all of the above are all over the internet, including YouTube videos.

I am so tempted to do the Hawaiian Curry dish it looks like Keema Curry but with less spices, I see what the family thinks.

Zucchini boats is such a childhood summer dish for me, I cant afford zucchini right now.

Cajun dirty rice, I do have good recipe and last time I made it was 5 years ago. Might come back again on the menu.

You all have given me so many good ideas that this will last even next month.

CP, I noticed in another thread that you are a bread baker. On your next baking day try making a version of ground beef roll-ups for dinner. You can make them with various fillings and if you think ahead you can keep a family size container of filling material in the freezer.

This recipe will give you the basic idea. They are also nice when made with mustard, chopped ham and cheese. If you are in a hurry you can make them with a biscuit style dough instead of a yeast dough.

Aunt Bea; all small amounts of left over stew or ground meat or chicken is made into hot pockets or as we say pirogi's and there is a mystery bag in the freezer, you never know what filling you get.

Sort of... I had about 6 Baby Yellow Dutch Potatoes and their skins are so thin, I just diced them small and held them in a bowl of water, so as not to darken prior to cook time.
This is a very adaptable recipe, you could swap out or in whatever you have on had, like or dislike, your call... cheap and friendly as Rachael Ray says
I figured it cost about ≤ $10USD to make this entire pot.

The tastiest vegetables are ones which have been roasted. I would roast some then add to meat with sauce and put everything over rice.

Preheat oven to very hot - the C equivalent to 415F.

Chop into larger-than-bite-size-pieces onions, carrots, potatoes, and other root vegetables you have on hand. Oil a baking pan, place vegetables in it and spread them out so they are one layer. Roast for 30 minutes. Flip everything to other side and roast 20 minutes more. Vegetables should be cooked through and easily pierced with a fork but still crunchy - not mushy. (Like "al dente" if you were cooking pasta.) If they are not cooked enough, roast 10 minutes more and check again.

While vegetables are roasting, cook hamburger meat. Drain fat, keeping meat in pan. Add tomato paste and spices. Keep warm.

Cook brown rice.

When vegetables are done, put rice on plates, add vegetables, then top with meat in tomato sauce.


Variations: change vegetable selection, use couscous or other grain instead of rice, change spices.

Kaneohegirlinaz, you are right, this is the land of hardly any baking mixes ( 21 from the famous company that is also bread, gluten free and dumplings). And no I dont buy them, when 5 kilos of flour cost less then one box, it isnt worth the money.

Impossible Pies, I am intrigued, I will look into this,

Should say, I never need to drain fat from my ground meat since I barely get out a 1 tablespoon or even less. Yes I need to add butter to fry it.
