Roast Chicken: What Temperature?

Okay, I know this is a really basic question, but to what temperature do I roast a whole chicken? My two reference-type cookbooks have very different answers: 140* and 170*. Which is correct?

You should do it at 170 or 180 for about 20 minutes per pound. How big is your chicken?

I didn't look at the weight. Maybe 4 or 5 pounds.

Probably about an hour and a half should do it. Enjoy!

Cooking a turkey below an oven temperature of 325F is unsafe because temperatures lower than this may encourage bacteria to grow inside the turkey where temperatures could stay below the danger zone of 140F
