I'm not sure if you've noticed, but at all the major supermarket chains, they
all now only carry farm raised shrimp. I'm not talking hor derves size, but bar-b-q size and not frozen bagged.

Farm raised larger shrimp has less flavor, is more blubberly and seems to be the wave of the future. Too bad.

Luckily, a few area specialty fish stores still sell Mexican tiger shrimp,
devained in 5 lb. frozen blocks, all neatly lined up together. Medium size.

Talking with the supermarket butcher, he said one reason for going farm
raised is it's less hassle for the supermarkets to deal with the import red tape. Not to mention that the local mexican/gulf seas are being overfished of shrimp.

All the shrimp I see in the supermarket is from Asia so I don't think import hassle is an issue. Besides, the importer has to deal with that, not the supermarket.

We produce heaps of prawns - lots of varieties - and yet our stores are full of imported seafood, mainly Vietnam and China but Asia in general. Don't see any noted farmed prawns and we have a very healthy aquaculture industry in Australia. I try to buy Australian whenever I can. I would rather buy Australian farmed than imported any day.

On a side note. Back in the mid 70's. Guymas, Mexico. Vacation.

He ate 2 kilos of bar-b-q'ed shrimp.

The shrimp was that fresh.

He got sick , but not from any tainted shrimp. He downed 2 kilos of
fresh mexican shrimp...butterflied and bar-b-qued!

Ya, probably most tiger shrimp IS from asia nowadays.
Mexico has been fished out!

Also...dig this...the waters/catch there in asia are very unregulated.
It's advised that you not eat shrimp/seafood from that area of the world more than twice a week.
Or some such warning as that.
