We allow the oil to cool to room temperature and allow any sediment to settle to the bottom of the pot. Although we have a large funnel with a fine mesh strainer (purchased from a brewing equipment vendor), if it passes the sniff test, we usually ladle the used oil into jars and store for future use in a cool dark place. We accumulate spent oil in a 5 gallon plastic container which we empty at our town recycling center. Prior to the enactment of outdoor burning bans, I was able to cleanly burn the waste oil while burning brush and sensitive documents.Another question: when you are using litres of oil, what do you do with the used oil? Do you re-use it? Do you filter it? How do you store it? When it's all used up, how do you get rid of it?
We purchase peanut oil in 11 to 20 litre jugs. To minimize oxidation we decant the larger jugs into 3 to 4 litre wine jugs.
Because we decant, we could store the spent oil in the emptied 11 - 20 litre containers in which the fresh oil was purchased but these containers are somewhat flimsy.
