Friendship cake starter

I, I'm a brand new member. Hope someone can help answer this question!

I have a jar of starter for a friendship cake that has been in the freezer for several years. I decided to use it and started preparing the recipe. I noticed that the starter had a somewhat stronger "fermented" odor than I remembered. I have already started adding ingredients to it. Do you think it's still good?
