I like to use canned beans in certain situations like salads because they are firm and solid, don't fall apart. I've also been cooking beans at home forever and prefer the way they taste. Is there anyway to cook beans at home and get them to be firm and solid like the canned ones?
 
don't cook them too long...
I've found that my home made beans are firm and retain their shape quite well. (in fact, I have a pic I'll be posting on a camping thread)
 
If your beans split and fall apart, they have been cooked too long. Next time you cook beans, start testing them for doneness earlier in the cooking process.
