I want to make a hot pocket type thing for my husband's lunch any ideas what I should make the outside out of? I was thinking some puff pastry or some bread dough. What ever it is I want to make it from scratch so that I feel good about him eating it. As it is now, I have a freezer full of food that is packed full of salt and preservatives- not really the best lunch. Plus it would be good to sneek some veggies in as well.

Anyone ever made these before?

There are numerous versions of this. What US marketeers call a Hot Pocket is known as a pastie, turnover, empanada, calzone, stromboli, etc. You can use puff pastry, pie crust, pizza dough or even egg roll wrappers.

I never thought about pizza dough, egg roll wrappers, or pie crust. Pie crust would give me that flakey crust, while pizza dough would be like a calzone.

I like making biscuit dough from a baking mix. Just mash it out with your hands, not too thin for a filled "pastie".
