Mustard Oil?

Does anyone use "mustard oil"? A Food Network show "Heartland" drizzled some on her Beer/Cheese soup. I wondered if it was worth finding and for what?

Never heard of it. I assume the oil comes from the seed of the mustard plant.

Our Indian neighbors swear by it. I've never tried it.

I have a bottle of it. I use it sparingly. You want to make sure you get the food-grade mustard oil. It is also sold in the skin-care product section in Indian markets. You don't want that for cooking.

It's used in Indian cooking and is a reasonable source of omega 3 polyunsaturated fats. Good for frying as the flavour is not dominant when heated. If you use it make sure it is intended for human consumption. Buy it in small quantities and store in the 'fridge as it goes rancid very quickly.

It's also used by mothers in northern India for massaging babies' skin.

Well, I haven't seen it in my local supermarket but, then, I haven't looked. I would think that if you buy it in a grocery shop, a health food store or specialist Indian food store and it's with the usual cooking oils it should be "food grade". If in doubt I'd probably ask.

I suppose it's "food grade" because it's "clean" and isn't contaminated by noxious chemicals or foreign bodies and is safe for human consumption.
