Mom always made it with a tomato sauce, one made with sauteed onions & peppers and canned tomatoes and other seasonings. Not unlike her spagheti sauce, really.

My ex's mother made it with a can of tomato soup and copious amounts of brown sugar. No wonder we are divorced (actually I loved his mom, who died young)(hell, maybe he was part of the reason!).

I make Sally's Buried Steak with Swiss steaks or burgers.

Saute the meat and make the sauce using diced stewed tomatoes and one can of cream of tomato soup. Simmer until meat is cooked through. I add whatever veggies I feel like at the time, onions, peppers, green beans or okra are all good. I usually serve over toasted hash brown patties.

Toasting the hash brown patties in the toaster oven works great and uses much less electricity. No preheating necessary.

We call it hamburger steak, here.. and top it with sauteed onions and beef gravy. yum yum
