Velvety smooth cake recipe?

I have been searching for a cake recipe that is dense and velvety (but not pound cake), but still light and fluffy, without the bubbles and "airyness". A bakery from when I was a child had this type of cake and I am unable to duplicate it! I have tried many homemade recipes and box recipes....any ideas?????
