Hi there! been awile since i was last on.
quick question ---i am making a HUGE ham for dinner(to go along with the cabbage rolls and homemade bread) but i want to make a brown sugar mustard glaze and the reciepe calls for cider vinegar.Problem is all i have is either regular white or red wine vinegar---well either of these work in it's place?
Thanks for your help...:chef:

I think you'll want to go with the cider vinegar. IMO, the taste just won't be right if you use any of the others in its place.

If all else fails, use pineapple juice, dijon mustard and honey. Reduce the pineapple juice carefully before adding the others.

I used this on our first and it lasted a day - only a few people. I now have 2 more hams to do on the barby.

What is the recipe you are following?

Glaze for Baked Ham

1 cup dark Karo syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
3 Tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a low boil.
Boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Let cool. Brush on ham
frequently during the last 30 minutes of baking.

You guys do it to me all the time.:censored:

Where I live we can't get Corn Syrup!!!

Sounds brilliant though. I've C&P'd and will have to get some in the Big Smoke.

I suggest you go by a .99 bottle of cidar vinegar. It will be the best for this recipe, and you'll find lots of other uses for it too.
Just because it's common and inexpensive, doesn't mean it isn't darn good.

This recipe would work with golden syrup (also known as cane syrup or light treacle) or honey.

how about honey???

HONEY MUSTARD GLAZE
1 1/2 c. honey
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
3 tbsp. prepared mustard
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
Dash ground cloves
In 2 quart saucepan combine all ingredients stirring constantly. Bring to boil over medium heat and boil 5 minutes. Brush frequently on ham during last 30 minutes of baking. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
