This may sound simple and a little too 60s ish, but when I was a kid, my mom had several Japanese girlfriends (Dad was in the Air Force, and we had many "war brides" of many different nationalities). One thing they often made for parties was suki-yaki; I guess you could say the Japanese equivalent of beef fondue! I still love it and haven't made it in ages. Great party food.
