I love stuff like this!

I will add that you can use a can of Crisco for a candle that will burn for weeks by inserting a wick in the can.

MacGuyver would be proud!

One item that caught my eye was the Mountain Dew lantern. I had to research that one, and it turns out that it's false... http://www.snopes.com/photos/food/mountaindew.asp

Lots of other good ideas, though.

Although sending the kids out on a scavenger hunt to "bring back something that makes noise" could produce interesting results

Cool ideas but I also looked up the mountain one & found out it wasn't true. I always have glosticks with me, I love playing with them.
