The only female recipient is Mary Edwards Walker, born to an abolitionist family, who volunteered to become the first woman surgeon in the US Army during the Civil war.
In 1865, President Andrew Johnson awarded her the Medal of Honor for her service, but the medal was revoked in 1917 on the grounds that she was a non-combatant. Some say it was because she was a suffragette.
In any case, Dr. Walker refused to give it back, and wore it every day until her death in 1919.
In 1977 the Army reinstated her medal, posthumously
