I had to go to the store to get a couple of things for the stew I'm going to make tomorrow (I forgot the garlic and bay leaves). But, when I stepped out the door I just had to stop and reflect for a minute ...
Up and down the street houses are decorated for Halloween - like they were when I was a kid - before we had to worry about crazy people putting poison or razor blades in kids candy, or pedophiles. And, there is a big old moon shining down ... and there is a chill in the air ... it's about 54ºF ... just right for a sweater and jacket ... and I could hear the announcer over at the high school football stadium about 3/4 mile from here. And, the girl that mows my lawn was here today ... so there was the smell of a new moan lawn in the air.
I took a deep breath, looked around, then closed my eyes. For a moment I was transported back to October of 1964-1966 - I thought about my old HS girlfriend - remembered the smell of her perfume, the smell of the concession stand at the football games ... remembered the sound of the bands ... the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat .... going to the drive-in for a Cherry-Vanilla Coke after the game ... and a lot of other memories came flooding in, too.
I took another deep breath .... then, with the sounds of the announcer at the high school stadium echoing in my ears ... I opened my eyes, came back to today, got into my car and went to the store. But, on the way home I kept looking at the moon and wondering what ever happened to Bev ....
