My daughter is an Arab specialist and has many friends and business contacts in Beirut, in both the Christiam and Muslim Arab communties there.

She and her partner were due to go on holiday/business in mid-September. As the airport runways have been blown to smithereens, and this latest appears not to have run its course, I suspect that visit will be put on hold.

My parents used to holiday in Beirut when we lived in Cyprus - it was considered the Paris of the near east, I remember loving the beaches and pastry shops.. Then my daughter went there on business 5 years ago and fell in love with it. She spent nearly 3 months there last year.

Now it's back to what it was 25 years ago. Another war zone.

I wouldn't be surprised. It seems no matter how grim a circumstance, someone always will find a way to capitalize on it.

What I find the most ironic, it is all in the name of God, and over land....these people need to re-evaluate things.

I work with a guy that worked with a group that was trying to formulate a peace plan between Israelis and Muslims. He said the Israelis insisted that certain property belonged to them, given to them by God. The Muslims said they would not rest until EVERY Israeli was dead.

Chance for peace between these 2 groups appears to be zero. Sad but true.

It is a very sad state of affairs for sure.

Just a reminder...lets stay away from the political and religious aspects of this topic. Thanks everyone!

A british warship has taken off a small group of UK nationals tonight. More will be evacuated over the next 4 days. They are being taken to Cyprus on HMS Gloucester (I think it's Gloucester).

This is a sad state of affairs for all in the region. I'm not going to post anything else on this thread as I suspect it might degenerate into a 'They're right; no They're right' argument.

jenny, I heard about the U.S. charging evacuees for their transport on the radio this morning, but did not hear about any amount. We'll see.

hm, would be interesting to find out how much they really charging for the transport, in mind it is extremely unfair.

I'm not sure if it's unfair or not... They went over there knowing the way things are. Should USA have to give them free transport?

Who ever picks them up is in danger too.

I'm not sure what to think.
