This morning’s Wall Street Journal has an interesting report on the relationship between Anheuser-Busch and Meir Stampfer, a Harvard epidemiologist. Stampfer is delivering lectures on the health benefits of moderate drinking, a subject on which he has done more than 50 research papers, at luncheons sponsored by the brewery. Stampfer’s research has found moderate alcohol consumption to be associated with lower rates of heart attack, diabetes and other ailments. The Journal quotes Francine Katz, an A-B vice president, as calling him “a rock star” in the world of alcoholic beverage research.

According to the Journal, Stampfer receives no money from Anheuser-Busch other than travel expenses. A-B has donated $150,000 in scholarship funds to the Harvard School of Public Health.
