I have no desire to own a business, but if I did I'd find it by walking the neighborhood and asking around. Around here there are thousands of small shops and B&Bs, and while a lot of them may not actually be advertised for sale, you'd be amazed at how many would be if someone just asked. A lot of people who really, really want to own their own businesses find themselves over their heads in a couple of years. I don't necessarily mean financially, although that too. But they simply have no idea how much work it will be. So if you go into that little coffee shop or book store or whatever, leave your card and ask the clerk to have the owner give you a call. Even if s/he has no desire to sell, you can talk about what it takes to have a successful small business.
