www.donotcall.gov I signed up here and it works.We still get a few calls fom local stuff but by law if you tell them to take you off their call list they must do so.

I also have caller id and if the number isn't familiar to me then I let the machine pick up. One of my brothers calls from work and his number comes up unknow so he's learnt to tell me to pick up the phone once the machine picks up because he knows I'm usually standing there wondering if its him or not
