There's a long tradition of alcohol manufacture in monasteries. Beer was safer than water to drink and the monasteries made beer for their own use and to sell to the local populace. Ditto nuns in convents.

Apart from beer there were other alcoholic drinks used medicinally that were made by monks, eg Chartreuse liqueur made by French Carthusian monks, but the story that Benedictine liqueur was made by monks is untrue - just a sales line thought up in the nineteenth century by it's inventor.
 
There's a reason that there were 12 apostles, and 12 beers in a 12-pack...

I think the apostles were more of a wine crowd. Probably dipped bread in olive oil while they drank their wine. We'd call them hipsters, today. :LOL:
