I got this new PC, and it just doesn't want to load up for me when I first turn the power on. I wonder if it is SKYPE that is messing me up. Spend an hour and a half yesterday with Dell support online. They've updated everything, cleaned up everything, checked everything and it was working. But this morning when I turned it on, same thing. Tried to start Internet and a page would not load up.

At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow

You probably have done that? That command will scan all Windows files and automatically replace or repair any that need it.

That's a good place to start.

I'm a computer specialist.

I specialize in not knowing a darned thing about them except clicking on buttons I shouldn't.

Sorry this is not helpful Mr. Charlie but I couldn't resist. ;)

Hope you get things sorted out. :D

Uninstall SKYPE. If your PC now works correctly, get a previous version of SKYPE.

I uninstalled Skype, took almost 40 minutes to even do that. It is much faster right now. I think I'll wait with Skype all together. I'll survive without I think.

Good to hear that. 40 minutes to uninstall Skype? Skype must really entangle itself into Windows.

I bet it did. Problem is. i am still having problems. Takes two-three restarts and even then I have to start and shot down the Internet another 2-3 times. Something is definitely wrong.

CharlieD, I'm starved of information. Skype has been uninstalled, but you're still having problems. I have the feeling that if you formatted C: (starting over), you'd still have issues. Isn't that pretty much what you did with your new Dell PC?

I'm not a guru at trouble shooting router problems. Do you connect to the net that way? Can you get Windows to act normal with no Internet connection? That's a good first step.

Could you have downloaded something you shouldn't have? Malware running in the background? You can also check what's running by right clicking the bottom bar and choose Task Manager. If something is sucking up your CPU and/or memory google it to find out more about it. If all is good in there check your Services that are running. Start->Search->Services. Again, google before stopping/disabling any of them.

Obviously the problem was not Skype - it lies somewhere else. I think it needs a competent technician to delve into the dark recesses to find the problem.

As mentioned, if it's a new machine then return it. No way you should have to put up with that much heartache from a new computer.

Not practical now maybe, but Steve has a point. A newly bought Dell PC should rev up fine.
If you have your files backed up, and it's a new system not working right, bring that sucker back into the store. Get a refund.
Buy another. I'm lucky enough to have a computer store nearby. I choose the case among many on the floor, then liquid cooling ,CPU, motherboard, graphics card, memory...and just pay the store $50 on top to put it together in about an hour. Fry's.

Spent another hour with another Dell support last night. According to him I had old drives. Makes no sense at all. But he said that it happens with mew computers. The first upgrade is very important. I asked him how is it possible that my old computer, 3 years old, was never updated and it worked just fined. He tried to explain to me, but he might as well be speaking Hindi as I could not understand anything. PC was working fine all last night. Will have to turn it on today and see what is going on. Weird.

This might be getting a little advanced, but I've found the following to be invaluable in finding what's running:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx

It will tell you the source of what's running. If it doesn't have a source listed, then it should be investigated, as it could be malware.

If you've never looked at this before, you will be surprised at what loads at startup.

This is ridiculous, Charlie. I bought a new Dell laptop in January and you can bet I would not spend hours on the phone with tech support trying to fix problems with a brand-new PC. I would call them back and insist on talking to a supervisor. Tell them you want a replacement.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to. It's doing the same thing again. It's just doesn't want to work when I first turn it on.

Just a quick update. Ended up returning and exchanging for the new computer. Got exactly the same model. Works just fine. Oh, also got $100 dollars discount on the new one and $75 to spend on Dell on line store. I thought it was fair.
