Favorite cooking (non-cookbook) books

Hey everyone,

I just finished reading "Heat" by Bill Buford and found it to be quite interesting and enlightening. I certainly have no intention of ever attempting to be a professional cook/chef, but I do enjoy vicariously playing out these types of kitchen fantasies and am searching for a few more recommendations for similar types of books, i.e. what its like in the kitchen of a nice restaurant, experiences with the hierarchy, or other narratives simply about cooking.

I also liked "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle simply because the food/wine descriptions make me hungry/thirsty :)

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I would definately recommend this book. No recipes, if that's what you meant.

This is a wonderful book: Amazon.com: Much Depends on Dinner: The Extraordinary History and Mythology, Allure and Obsessions, Perils and Taboos of an Ordinary Meal: Books: Margaret Visser

I think the title says it all
The trouble with eating Italian food is that five or six days later you're hungry again. ~ George Miller
