It occurred to me that my reply in the "Painted Stones" thread might be of use here. Psycho-poodle's dog sitter makes painted stones, and she made a whole set of them for her neighbor who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. She painted the names of all of the woman's kids and grandkids, as well as activities and events that were important to her on the stones. The woman holds them and thinks about what is painted on them, and it helps her remember people, places and things that are important to her.

Eventually, Alzheimer's is going to win, but for now, it gives this woman a way to hang on to her memories for as long as possible. I wish I would have thought of it for my grandfather.
