i had one of those microsoft intellimouse, it started doing that and then it died forever, may he rest in peace

Yep, it was the battery! Thanks everyone! How dumb am I to never have even thought about the mouse taking batteries?!?

That issue's solved, but the computer is still acting up big time. Ugh.
