I saw this posted on Facebook and I'm stunned how many people get this wrong and are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE you're an idiot of you don't agree with them.

What's your answer?

My answer

Each bottle is 10
Each burger is 5
Each beer is one
so burger (5) + one beer=6 times one bottle(10) = 60

^ That's what my brother just said...multiply first, but he came up with 25 as the answer. I can't believe I called him for this.

three bottles = 30 so the bottle = 10
bottle plus 2 burgers = 20 = 10 for the bottle plus 2 burgers = 5 each
burger (5) + 2 of 2 beers = 9 = burgers are 5, plus 2 beers each are 2, so 5+2+2=9

What are the order of operations?
Burger (5) + beer(1 of 2!) x bottle (10)
multiplication comes before addition, so
is 10 x 1 = 10
addition comes next
10 + 5 = 15
That's what I think. 15, I'm willing to be wrong

The answer is 15.

Bottle of beer = 10
Burger = 5
Glass of beer = 2

If you recall the order of operations mnemonic "PEMDAS" (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction), it makes sense.

Oops... wrote that wrong.

Bottle of beer = 10
Burger = 5
GlassES of beer = 2
Single glass of beer = 1 (half of 2)

The answer is still 15. ;)

I was lucky to get the correct number for each representation. Going from left to right the answer is 60. Multiplication first = 15.

No fair leaving us hanging, Andy.

With my Math Luck the correct answer will be something like "Albuquerque".

I'm going to go with "15".

Had to ask Himself a quick question to verify I computed right. He then said I can't infer that if 2 beer mugs equals two points, only one beer mug is only one point. I told him yes, because that is what logic would say - and I scored a perfect on a logic exam back when my brain was sharp in 1971. Mr. Smarty-Pants wanted to write it out algebraic-ly. I took the laptop away from him before he could start. On the other hand, I now understand completely where our son got his "math-itude" from.

I'm still going with "15", no matter what Himself says.

It's 15.

5+1x10 = 15

I was taught the acronym PEMDAS as well in order to remember the order of functions, but I recently learned that it more accurately should be called GEMDAS.

The G stands for Grouping symbols. That way you can use brackets, braces, radicals, and fraction lines as well as parentheses.

So you have to do the multiplication first. 1x10 = 10, then go left to right with addition (and subtraction).

5 + 10 = 15

I am not even going to try. Math and I don't agree. When someone has the perfect answer, then I will be back.
