Yesterday was bed sheet washing day. Which is all fine and good that you get it done and get sheets on the bed before you get sleepy!!! :) To make the story short, I got sleepy and declined my DH's offer to put sheets on the bed....... I slept sooooo good last night that it was unreal!!!!!!!! I figured it would be the opposite, but much to my delight, I rested soundly and peacfully without any sheets, pillow cases, just a comforter that DH dragged over from another room.

I guess I always thought I would sleep better when crisp clean sheets have been put on, but I never thought a bare bed would be so "cozy". Even DH commented how restful his sleep was.

Am I going nuts? Life has come down to a bed with no sheets????

sattie, you need new sheets. a nice 500 thread count egyptian cotton would do the trick.

(btw, anything above 500 is a sales gimmick.)

it's not just about thread count, though. the quality of the cotton is important as well. the longer the fiber or staple the better. cheap cotton is below an inch staple, while good egyptian cotton is upwards of a 2 inch staple.

i sleep so few hours that a comfortable bed is critical to me.

if anyone's looking for a great bed, check out chatham and wells. make sure you go for a firmer mattress. i've heard bad things about their softer versions, but the firm ones are highly rated, unbelievably comfortable, and durable.

sattie, these are my two cents:
I only use a 250 matress sheet and a duvet with a nice 250 cotton cover, less work to fix the bed and feels perfect.

I will stretch buckytown recommendation and say that 250 threads egyptian cotton is more than adequate.
If the Denier (weight) of the fabric is too high, the sheet will feel softer to the touch, but it will not "breath" enough and will be uncomfortable (you will feel sweaty).
Or, as buckytom indicated, a higher count could be a sales gimmick since companies are not forced to count each yarn separately. They can use plied yarns and count all threads -a 250 thread fabric that has 3 fibers spun into 1 can be labeled 750- for advertisment purposes.

I can't say that I liked the feel of the quilting of the mattress against my skin. But that might have more to do with me having good sheets and a crap mattress!!! LOL Mind you, I can also sleep just about anywhere, driveways, casinos, chairs, tables, floor... ;-)

I'm with BT, total sheet snob here. 500 thread count egyptian cotton, I also have the same sheets for my guest room! My peeps have to be comfy when they stay over!

I guess I got crappy sheets eh???? I got the sheets on last night and did not sleep as well... I still don't get it! I'm comin to stay with you redkitty!!!

Flannel sheets are to die for esp. in cold weather.............so warm and cozy

I'm with you on this, expat. Our bedroom isn't heated, so there's nothing like crawling into a bed that is dressed with flannel sheets, an electric blanket and a couple of goose down comforters. We have several sets of flannel sheets, so we're never without them when a set is in the laundry.

I've only slept sans sheets a time or two and found it unsettling, regardless of the softness and/or coziness of the top coverings.

Also, we have a Sleep Number air bed and LOOOOOVE it. It's the most comfortable mattress we've ever slept on. We keep it ultra-firm and started sleeping better the first night we had the mattress.

The worst set of sheets I have ever experienced was in 1986 in Dover, UK where we slept the night before the channel crossing to France - nylon sheets!!!!! They were awful!
