Nursery Rhyme Vocabulary

I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person. By way of education, business experience and general life experience, I've accumulated a decent vocabulary. There are times when I have to look up a word, but never before have I had to look up a word in a nursery rhyme!

I was reading a book of nursery rhymes to my grandson and he selected "The Owl and the Pu$$ycat". Near the end, there is a couplet that reads:

"They dined on mince and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;"

Please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know what a runcible spoon is.

BTW, the spell checker doesn't know the word either.

I don't know, but check this out:
(sounds sort of like R.R.'s "spork")

http://www.famousquotes.me.uk/nursey...e_*****cat.htm

It won't let me type out - the owl and the pu*sycat, so you'll have to type out the whole thing I guess, in your google search.

Thanks for the link, Vera. Good background.

I like runcible spoon better than spork.
