A lesson I learned from buying memory cards for cameras is one that translates well to hard drives as well. Sometime is it smarted to buy two smaller drives than one large one. The thinking is that if you fails you have only lost 50% of your data instead of 100%.
That being said, I am lazy and get the largest I can at the time.
