I noticed while looking at some of the posts that a member had "banned" under their name. What does that mean? Are they not allowed to post?

Not allowed - If it's the person I'm thinking of she (I think she) used DC to spam a bunch of us into clicking into a website that was weird. Yea, banned.

There are different levels of banning. Sometimes we ban people for a week or so and sometimes it is longer or permanent. If you see banned under someones name then that means that currently they can not post.

There might be more, I don't know. But the only two I've seen banned are Keltin and Fluffygrrl (I think I spelled that one right).

Honesty is not what PO's anyone bowlingshirt. It was the disregard for posted rules that was the issue.

Just curious?????? What's the number one reason someone gets banned? Is it the posting of spam? I know that the mods are vigilant on protecting members from that as soon as they know.

Keltin was banned?
I wondered why I haven't seen him post in a while...... I thought he said some useful stuff......

Well the number one reason as new member gets banned is because of spam. Established members never get banned for spam because spammers never make it to established member status.

There really is no number one reason why established members get banned. Each case is individual with its own set of circumstances. What I can say is that we do everything in our power to not ban an established member and give the person chance after change with explicit instructions on what they can not longer do or what they have to do to keep from being banned. None of us enjoy that part of the job, but it is a necessary evil to keep this place the great place that it is.

I was waiting for someone else to ask first.... Why DO they get banned?

I will give you an example, but so that we do not embarrass anyone it will be a hypothetical situation.

This is just one of a million scenarios that could happen.

A member posts something calling another member a name or saying something insulting to them. A mod or admin would send a PM to the person after removing the post telling them that when they said xyz that was insulting and in violation of our community policies (which we would sent them a link to as well). We would also tell the person that if they have any questions at all then they are free to discuss it with us via PM.

A few weeks later the same member starts a political discussion. We would again remove the post and let the member know that they violated the community policies (with link again). We would generally ask them at this point to make sure they have read all the rules and again let them know that if they have any questions then they can ask us.

A little while later the same member posts another insulting remark. We would again remove the post and again PM them member. This time it would be a stronger worded PM and we would most likey say that the next time they insult someone on the public board then they will be banned for a week. We would probably copy the part of the community policies that state that you are not allowed to insult members and if you have a problem with someone then you take it to PM, report the post, or alert a staff member by PM.

The same member insults someone again. We then ban them for a week and let them know why. We also tell them that if they break the rules again after their week long ban is over then they could be permanently banned.

Again, this is just one possible scenario. There are a million more. There are even a million different ways this very same scenario could go. This is just one way, off the top of my head, that it could happen.

No, GB, I don't envy your job. It's got to be tough to work a full time job and then to monitor a site like this which in my 3 years of prowling here has grown exponentially. Much thanks and appreciation for jobs well done by all of you moderators as I've surfed other sites and they are not nearly as well monitored as this one.

Thanks expatgirl. It is a hard job and there are times were all of us want to pull all our hair out and scream, but for the most part we get to deal with people like you and just about everyone else here and that is what makes it all worth while.

And, if one reads the Community Policies one will realize all we really ask here is that everyone respects one another and respects the forum. Yes, it is a bit longer than that statement but that is the bottom line.

GB, thanks for your explanation. I know that took a chunk of time to write.

All I know is that this site is one of the best monitored of all---you won't find porn, rude comments, profanity (what is it with this stuff--it's everywhere?) name calling, etc. etc. and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a teen which some of our members are. And if a member does step over the line they are informed by a Private Message to politely adhere to the policies.

I was banned once from a board for arguing with a "scientist" that if you put a dry towel in your dryer your clothes will dry faster. She did all this "matter times X plus Z minus Y" crap and all I said was "well, here's some links." I was banned the next day. Apparently, Duke Power doesn't know as much as that scientist. LOL

:)Ive been reprimanded a couple of times once for posting something thought to be political which I did not realize and that was fine another time I was just so irritated I said the F letter not the word .I thankfully was not banned but did get the slap on the hand which was fine with me.Sometimes we are a bunch of kids and must go to the naughty corner or to Doves wood shed:LOL: And sometimes we just need a little reminder. And yet if you are gracefully diplomatic you can sometimes get your point across .But not with politics for sure which is what this site is not about
