No matter where I go, I always ask for a senior discount. And if I get a "No, I am sorry, we don't give senior discounts." I always act shocked. Like, you don't like seniors. I tell them this is the first store I have ever been in that doesn't give senior discounts. They almost hang their head in shame and offer me a small discounts. I always have my AASRP card in hand. Although when you look at me, you know I am a senior.

At Boston Medical Center, they have a Dunkie's. There is one server who very softly told me that they are not to give the discounts unless the customers ask. I had asked, but for sharing that into with me, I make it a point to always get in his line and give him a tip.

Just remember Aunt Bea, a lot of places do not give it automatically. You have to ask each and every time. And a lot of stores only have senior discount on only certain days of the week. And some places will even ask for an ID. Most places will accept your AARP card. I have been doing this for years. I started when Howard Johnson was still in business. They gave you a card that they marked each time you came. Then when you hit a certain number of visits, your ticket was free. I was sorry to see them go our of business.

Interesting information, taxlady. However, I don't think it's universally the rule all across the U.S.

For example, our Kroger chain only offers a 5% discount and that's only on Tuesday. Kohl's has similar limitations. Only on certain days with a small discount. Ditto for Big Lot's here.

I can't address much of your list because nearly 90% of what is on it isn't available to us.

One thing my husband does with regularity is to ask if the vendor accepts a military discount. Many do. Many who don't accept senior ones.

In my estimation, the only real smart thing to do is to ask.

I usually ask. Where I get my haircut, I asked if they gave a discount when I turned 65. They did not but thought they should. I suggested 20%, they offered 10%. I accepted.

Thanks, Taxy. I have that list and keep it in the glove box in my car. If I go down to the city with my daughter in her car, I bring it with me.

We don't have a lot of those options here in my small town, and our local Albertson's doesn't offer the senior discount. I've asked about it, they said they'll look into it.

I was very interested in the 40% discount on Wed. from K Mart. That's a significant savings! Our little town actually has one, and I buy lots from there. I called the store and they said they don't offer it. Come Mon. morning, I'll get to the bottom of this when their Corporate office is open in Ill.

Some of the discounts are similar to Caslon's coupon, lots of fine print.

One example is our local Walgreen's, they offer 20% off full price merchandise on the first Tuesday of every month. I never remember on the first Tuesday and rarely buy anything that is not already on sale.

Ever since I turned 55, I always ask. The worst they can say is "No."
Addie, I like the shocked look approach. Gonna try it!
