Ok, that other thread about who you've met seems to have sparked some interest in folks getting together and meeting. I've got a couple of thoughts about that and I'm sure others will have some good thoughts too. So, to that end I'm posting a poll with ideas about meeting and we can go from there.

Keep in mind this is a very preliminary poll. Any ideas will get added in and firmed up later. I can add poll options if anyone has something they'd like to add.

I was thinking this yesterday too, "The 1st Annual Discuss Cooking Convention". I would love to meet all of you, but funds and time would prevent me from doing so.... And I am a scaredy- pants traveller with just me and my daughter. Kansas is a "central location" though hahaha! I think the resort area sounds good too! What fun it would be! Maybe we could get some buses and travel the US picking up everyone along the way! :)

Unfort., with the new job getting ready to start I won't be able to come....:( . They own me for a year (can't miss a day) and in order for me to get every other weekend off they decide what days I work through the week and even though its on the schedule they can change my days at their will. So ultimately, making plans for the next year are going to be quite difficult. But then again I may be able to sweet talk my nurse manager into letting me have some days off in a row. I'm all for the central location though.

A central location to me means a location that is usually fairly inexpensive to get to for everyone - not so much "central" in geographical nature. And this is not to say that some people may just want to get together in a more regional location if that what suits them. I think we will all have more courage in "numbers" (except MJ - he's a big ol' baawk baaaaawk) and it won't make it so difficult for us insecure people.

:) Vegas!Or where ever we could get a really good discount as Im concerned about affordability for some folks but also not a crappy boring destination.Another thought is using Amtrak for some people like me who hate to fly but I will if I hafto_Or drive depending how far it is.
I always get a sleeper car if its overnight or more ,coach is alot cheaper if thats what works for you.

But what about all of our international buddies? :( (sniff sniff)

hmmm, 12,841 members.... we might need to reserve a small city. Of course we will all be there!

:( Someone is going to have to bring a photo of me and pretend I am there. Dh and I just booked a holiday, back in UK, and decreed that we will now have to start watching the pennies even harder if we are going to put a downpayment on a house and even think about the B word. I am also hoping that the new house will be the base of a new business venture for me...so I don't imagine we'll be in the States any time soon, unless my f-i-l pays for us to visit him in NYC. But I would have loved to come otherwise.

I agree with the cheap flights to Vegas. Even from the east Coast I can find round trip tickets for under $300. And lodging isn't that bad out there either.

Not to mention, there is A LOT more to do out there then just gamble, and food is EVERY WHERE!

Vegas is calling!

I would love to meet all of my dear friends!

MGM Mirage is hiring here in town, maybe I should go take a look....

I never thought to add in there, do we want to find a place to cook for each other? Or are we just going to focus on Meet and Greet?

Altho Las Vegas is not "centrally located," there are cheap flights there from literally everywhere, including countries outside US! as well, it has definitely become a real foodie town, with lots of culinary orgs holding conventions and meetings there every year. Altho many of the "famous" hotels are pricy, there are a lot of spots that might not be "on the strip" that are much less, for those who need to economize. Then, there are lots of places in the area for those like Jean, who has her own motor home... to park their rigs.

I think Vegas sounds like a plan, even tho I really like New Orleans better. ;)

Unless we have someone in our midst with a restaurant or cooking school where we could 'do that," seems like "Meet, Greet and (of course) Eat" would be the way to go.

(pssssssst.....cheap flights to Vegas..................)
jkath is right. Vegas may not be 'central', but it is pretty accessible AND there's lots of stuff to do.

edited to add: Oh, and I DO have a home here in Vegas with a kitchen/dining room area large enough to host a gathering. It's just minutes away from the South Point Hotel/Casino, that offers reasonable rates and runs shuttles to the main part of the Las Vegas Strip.

:) Cheap buffets galore also they make it so cheap because they want you to gamble and lose every penny you got.I would love to hit up the pawn shops where people sell what they have left to afford to go home after losing their a***s.

:) Trying to cook would be too complicated when there is other fun to be had just think do we really want to shop for food then cook then clean up?
Not me. I want to spend time with other DC people and goof off some .Also for how many days I think 3 minimum and that wouldnt be enough if alot of us show up and people want to also experience LV.

I would so love to meet you all, but I am not able to travel much distance without a lot of discomfort...so much so, that I'm no fun once I get there.

A word to the wise...I suggest that if you all do decide to do this, you elect a committee to organize the event, rather than laying it all on one person.
First of all, it's too much work for one person. And there's no way one person can make everyone happy.

Miss Alex...

Food for thought...

1. Out of the total membership how many are truly active?
2. Where are the bulk of those members located? East Coast? West Coast?
etc.
3. Would the DC Map be of any use to answer this?
4. Could Ben pull up any kind of location demographic on currently active
members? Members that have posted in the last 60/90 days or whatever.

Where the majority of people are (that would attend) should be a factor in choosing a location.

In some business circles I have moved in there are regional "Round Table Meetings" Where people of like mind meet/greet and discuss various subjects, ideas etc. etc. These type of events are usually sponsered in part by vendors, advertisers, etc. Who jump at the chance to put their names and products in front of consumers. They normally have no problem with meeting room and food expenses for an evening. All other expenses (travel, hotel accomodations etc.) are the resposiblity of those who attend. I am sure many of you have experienced this type of an event.
I do not expect answers to these questions but offer them as something for you and others to ponder.
