...like clockwork! Please realize that Discuss Cooking is a privately owned website. There is no "freedom of speech" and the few rules we do have we try our best to enforce. Please, for the sake of clarification, re-read the links below to things that may have either been forgotten or not ever read at all.

Please re-read our Community Policies that clearly states our stance on the use of profanity, the behavior towards other members/administration/moderators and how to properly deal with issues you have with another member/administration/moderator, political views, religious views, etc. This also deals with copyright issues, signature issues, etc.

We get criticized for being heavy-handed. We get criticized for NOT being heavy-handed enough. There is no easy way moderate a forum with this many people. We sometimes look at a conversation and hope it will correct itself. When we see it's not going to correct itself we do, and will always will, step it to stop it. Sometimes not every conversation gets seen though. If anyone has an issue with a post please use the "Report Post" feature. That's what it is for. Please do not retaliate in the open forums. We will suggest, just like the community policies state, to take these things to private messages or better yet, notify an administrator or moderator or just use the "Report Post" feature, which will be faster way to get it resolved.

This is a cooking site first and foremost. Everyone needs to take a deep breath. Surely the few rules we have aren't hard to follow. All we ask is you be polite, if you have an issue take it to PM, and most of all just respect those around you.

I don't know if it's the holidays where there is a lot of tension in everyone's life or what? I think it is human nature to be more "vocal" sitting behind a computer screen.

I know someone will take the stance of "you do not have to treat us like children" so I'll get this over with now. This is not the intention of this post. This post is just to try to make everyone aware how out of control things are and to please, step back and take a breath.

Thanks for reposting this important explanation Kitchenelf. And thanks to GB for writing the "community policies" which I again re-read just to make sure I was sticking by all the rules, which I have. You guys do a great job here! Always on the ball and many mods or admins around to keep an eye on things which makes this site the best one IMO. I really do mean what I say. I've been to many sites, and have never seen one as good as this as far as keeping things in check. Thanks again for all that you volunteers do. It's a tough job, and a thankless one at times.

Jeeze...that really stinks that something happened that this had to be posted. :(This is a wonderful site and I have mentioned it to quite a few of my new co-workers. I, as I am sure that almost everyone here does as well, really appreciate all of the work that the site mods and admins. do to make this site so great...speaking from the bottom of my heart. I don't quite understand why you would have any reason to use profanity or get into an argument on this site...with all the wonderful members?!?! A great, big pat on the back to everyone who makes this site awesome . Sorry a few bad apples had to make this thread start.:)

:) Thanks For The Reminder... Every Forum Must Have Rules Or It Would Get Really Crazy... Thanks Admin...

i'd say it's almost a yearly thing elfie.

it took me a while to get used to the fact that while chatting here, your posts will be viewed by people who have the power to censor. it's an unnatural feeling for me, and i suspect many other people would feel the same.

i've been on unmoderated boards which require thick skin, lightly moderated boards that have their days, and heavily moderated boards such as this one.

from my experience, unmoderated boards can be fun, like driving at high speed. but it's in heavy traffic, so there's bound to be wrecks, tension, and aggravation. i can't go there on a daily basis.

lightly moderated boards are the ideal, imo, but are extremely difficult if not impossible to pull off. it's human nature to have some conflicts. also, cliques tend to form around common enemies, and that can get ugly, or at the very least, uninviting.

heavily moderated boards take a little getting used to, and some trust on everyone's part. trust is a fragile thing, however.

all of that said, the good part is that while we're all human, we have some pretty good humans who are in charge of said censorship here.

the only problem that i've seen recently is when people, both moderators and members alike, take out heir displeasure on one another in the public forum. i am guilty of such not very long ago. members can be censored, even negative karma-tized for it. the admins have all final say. that's just the way it is.
the problem that i'd mentioned comes when the rules are not obeyed by both parties, admins & members. to explain: i saw it suggested in one of the recent threads that got a little contentious that public admonishment of a member is sort of considered good practice once in a while to remind everyone of the rules. i think that is totally wrong. the admins should be examples of how they want the site to run, and should do everything in their power to be "above" the fray.
that would include a polite pm when they have to be contradictory about something, or have to do some severe censoring. (i'm not suggesting a pm for every little thing).

we, as members, have a responsibility to try to communicate within the posted rules.

i'm sure i'm not gonna be popular with you guys about this, but admins and moderators have an even greater responsibility to show us how it's done.

other than that, i think we're cool...

edited to add: thanks for not locking this thread (i hope it wasn't an oversight, lol) and leaving it up for discussion. it means something when our opinions matter, and are allowed to be viewed by others.

I've been escorted out behind the woodshed more than a few times in my life

Wow, I have no idea what happened while I was not looking, but, I can say that I have had my moments on here and it was quickly taken care of whether I said the wrong thing or someone else did. I appreciate EVERY single person that has to do with this site being the wonderful place that it is. I feel safe and I can be open and don't have to really worry about judging. We will always have someone that is rubbed the wrong way, that is just natural, but, all of you have done a great job in moderating.

You guys aren't "heavy-handed" at all, comparably ; i once was kicked off (not cencored- Kicked Off!) a site for ranting about the seeming inconsistancy of gas price flucuations. Their reasoning.... I was "too Political!"
no woodshed that time; I was shown the highway:bounce:

I honestly think you guys and gals handle the moderation quite
well, the most difficult thing I had to get use to was the re wording of the
title of my message, but it is policy ,so its no big deal...
Other than that all the mods I have dealt with are quite friendly and helpfull... :)

My 2 cents:
It's your site. Run it the way you want. It's not a democracy.
Apparently a lot of people are at least, very comfortable with how you do it. There are a pretty good number of regular members.
Ironchef has a good suggestion but I like that we sort of know the people we're discussing cooking with through other threads. I don't post a lot but I know where to go to find a chat w/ nice people and the best place to find help as a novice in the world of "serious" cooking. Thanks for sharing your site with me.:chef:

It's really nice to see elfie's thread title with the words "every couple years" in it.

Must mean somebody's doing something right or this board would have burst into flames long ago.

Thanks to Andy R and all the wonderful mods and members who make this such a fun place to visit.
