Sisler, a first baseman for the St. Louis Browns, hit .407 in 1920, getting 257 hits, a record that held up for 84 years. Two years after setting that record, a severe bout of the flu damaged his sinuses so badly that he was left with permanent double vision. He sat out the whole 1923 season, but trained himself to hit the "two balls" he saw crossing the plate. Astoundingly, he batted over .300 in six of his last seven seasons
