Mary Anderson came up with the idea one snowy, stormy day in 1902 while on a visit to New York City. She noticed the driver of her streetcar was having trouble seeing through the window. She then went home and sketched an effective design, and was awarded a patent in 1903.

i've mentioned it before: it has been known throughout history that much like the inuits, new yorkers have 17 different "f" words for snow. ;)
