The expression, “His Name is Mud”, used to describe someone who is in big trouble, originated through the fact that Dr. Samuel Mudd aided Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth in his effort to escape the Union Army.

Since the expression, "His name is mud" has origins in England prior to the 1860s, there's no truth to the belief that it was first coined in reference to Dr. Samuel Mudd of Maryland, who holds the dubious distinction of treating John Wilkes Booth's broken leg, which he suffered as a result of leaping off the Ford's Theatre balcony that fateful night he shot Abraham Lincoln.
