you may not feel or hear them, but earthquakes are taking place all over the world at this very minute. most of these temblors register only 1-2 on the richter scale. on average every year, the USGS reports 18 major earthquakes measuring between 7.0 and 7.9 and one extremely large quake measuring 8.0 or larger.
 
i missed #'s 4 and 6 today.

and we have an earthquake computer in our evening news bureau. it is a display of the globe, and you can zoom around at any time of the day and see where earthquakes are registering, marked by concentric red circles.
 
I get email updates from USGS whenever there is an earthquake over (I think) 5.5 anywhere in the world. It's sometimes quite surprising how many emails I get each day. There are always at LEAST a couple.
