Johnny didn't even write it! "Ring of Fire" was co-written by June Carter, Johnny's future bride, and Merle Kilgore, who would be best man at their wedding. The song is based on a poem, "Love's Ring of Fire" by Bob Johnston. It was first recorded by June's sister, Anita.
"Ring of Fire" stayed at the top of the Country chart for seven weeks, and made it to #17 on the Pop chart.
Johnny's daughter, Roseanne Cash, recently wisely refused to allow the tune to be used is a hemorrhoids ad jingle.
