Hound Dog was recorded six different times by six different artists before Elvis chose to record it on the flip side of don't be Cruel in 1956.
His performance of Hound Dog on the Ed Sullivan Show set off the controversy about his gyrations that caused him to be filmed from the waist up only during future TV performances.
Hound Dog stayed at #1 a record 11 weeks, before being bumped by Elvis' Love Me Tender.
