Soldiers in Khan's army were made into executioners after each battle. The defeated army,
as well as the inhabitants of the defended area, were ordered to assemble outside the
walls of the defended city, and each Mongol soldier, armed with a battle ax, was assigned
to kill at least fifty of the captives. As proof that they had carried out their orders, they
were obliged to cut off an ear from each victim, collect them in a sack and bring them to
their officers to be counted
