Thomas Edison was born with normal hearing. The malady was caused when a twelve-year-old Edison was trying to board a train at Frazier Station, Michigan.
A conductor took hold of his ears to help pull him aboard. "I felt something snap inside my head", Edison later said. "My loss of hearing started from that moment and has worsened ever since."
